We will discuss the development of the Biblical David as a subject matter in Renaissance Florentine art through an analysis of the work of two great sculptors, Donatello and Michelangelo.
Donatello can be considered one of the most important artists of the 15th century! Indeed, Donatello’s earlier, groundbreaking works had a great influence on Michelangelo. One could even say that there wouldn’t have been a Michelangelo without Donatello. Although Michelangelo lived to the ripe old age of 89, we will discuss Michelangelo’s early life and work, cumulating with his absolute 1504 masterpiece, the David. This amazing statue becomes even more astounding when put into its social, political, religious and artistic context.
This is event is free of charge, however donations are happily accepted and encouraged.
The virtual presentation will last about 1 hour (45 minutes for the talk and 15 minutes for questions and answers).
I look forward to seeing you and discussing Renaissance art!
